Many have noted that forgiveness is an important pathway to supernatural healing. Dr. Art Mathias is living proof that when we understand and apply the principles of biblical forgiveness, toxic emotions are released and the Lord’s healing will often come to us very easily. His simple approach has set thousands free from suffering and disability, including blind and deaf persons who have experienced creative miracles.
A Personal Journey To Healing
Art discovered these principles as part of his own healing journey. Faced with a terminal illness, he searched the Bible for Scriptures about healing. Over and over again he saw Scriptures that connected physical conditions in the body with spiritual health.
He saw that repentance and forgiveness are closely connected to physical healing, and learned that even subtle sins such as resentment, shame, and worry give the devil a way to attack our health, and can block the flow of the Lord’s healing power.
The Turning Point
In February 1997, Art Mathias sustained a neck injury, and by the fall of that year, the pain had progressed and his arm had withered. He had surgery that fused four levels in his neck to alleviate the symptoms, but he developed some unexpected complications.
Art describes what happened: “Following surgery to repair my neck injury, I suddenly became allergic to almost everything. I could only eat four foods, and it hurt to eat even those foods. My skin grew so sensitive that it hurt to put on clothing.
“The nerves in my toes and fingers burned, then grew numb and were dying. The numbness was progressing up my arms and legs. I went to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, where doctors diagnosed this disorder as small fiber neuropathy. They told me that the neuropathy would progress until it reached a vital organ, and estimated I had two years to live before it killed me.
A Crisis Of Faith
Art asked his church elders to pray for him. In addition, he tried many different medical treatments and a great many alternative treatments, but nothing stopped the progress of the neuropathy. Art says, “The pain was horrible, but even worse was my level of fear. Something I did not understand and could not stop was slowly killing me.
But God had a plan! At just about the darkest hour of my life, my sister was supernaturally healed of breast tumors. She explained that she had gone to a divine healing seminar, and that when she got rid of buried resentments in her heart, the tumors just disappeared. She recommended that I try it.
The Search For Truth
“I was quite skeptical for several reasons. In the first place, I had been a Christian all my life, even gone to a Christian college and majored in Bible Studies, and not only had I not heard of being healed by forgiveness, I did not think I had any sins bad enough to kill me.
“In the second place, I believed, as do many, that we received total forgiveness when we accepted the Messiah as our Savior. So I thought that whatever sins I did have were covered by the blood of Jesus. However, I was so desperate that I decided to search the Bible and see what it said about health.”
The Biblical Connection Between Soul And Body
“The Bible actually teaches that our bodies are barometers for what is going on spiritually in our lives. There are many, many passages, particularly in the Book of Proverbs, that point to the spirit-body relationship.
“One passage in particular that meant a lot to me is Third John 1:2: ‘Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.’ Our health will prosper even as our soul prospers.
“My health really did begin to prosper when I discovered Hebrews 12:12-15: Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.
Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled
