For over 35 years, I have researched and examined the divine encounters of hundreds of people and I can affirm without hesitation that supernatural experiences are real. God does interact with people today and He often does so in direct and even miraculous ways. Here is such one story:
The Tragic Accident
A head-on collision left Richard Madison with multiple broken bones and massive internal injuries. Initially pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, he lay in a brain-dead coma for 27 days. Then, in response to the faithful prayers of Richard’s mother and other family members and friends, God healed him miraculously and completely.
Richard’s Account
Richard describes what happened: The force of the impact in the head-on collision pushed my left leg into my pelvis, broke my left hip, and severely broke my right foot. Since I wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, my upper body collided with the steering wheel, breaking most of the ribs in my chest. One of the broken ribs punctured the aorta artery at my heart while another one punctured my right lung.
In addition, my spleen was ruptured, the C5 vertebra in my neck was broken, my jaw was broken, and my right eye was knocked out of its socket.
Making matters worse, I was trapped in my vehicle. It took 39 minutes to get me out and transported to Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, where I was pronounced dead on arrival.
Pronounced Dead
Richard was declared dead on arrival and brain dead because his aorta had been torn and his spleen ruptured for 39 minutes. With such severe injuries and no brain activity, Richard’s family was told to make funeral arrangements. Then circumstances took a different turn.
Richard says the leading trauma physician later told him personally that he had been pronounced dead on arrival and was on the way to the morgue. In Richard’s words:
Then the doctor said that something told him to bring me back and at least try something. When he said this I was stunned. I was still unable to speak, so I wrote the name “Jesus” on a piece of paper and showed it to him. He said, “I am not going to say it was Jesus that told me to bring you back,” but I wanted the doctor to know that I knew it was Jesus.
The Power of Faith
It truly is amazing how God can use a few believers to accomplish His will. Richard had a lot of family members who went to church, but only a few really believed in miracles. When Richard first arrived at the hospital following his accident, he appeared to be beyond hope. Things did not look good for him that day, and his condition did not improve for the next four weeks.
“They gave me 124 units of blood. I got hepatitis, yellow jaundice, blood poisoning, and double pneumonia. The doctors could not control the infections and fever.”
They put me in beds of ice to try to bring the fever down. They gave me every antibiotic known to man. My neck was in a brace because my C5 vertebra was broken. Since they did not expect me to sur- vive anyway, they waited 25 days to repair my broken bones. All during this time I had no discernible activity in the lower lobes of my brain. Standing on God’s Word
For 27 days, things were touch and go with Richard. He was kept on life support as his mother, aunt, and uncle stood firm on the Word of God, knowing that all things are possible to them who believe.
My mother refused to make funeral arrangements. She kept telling the hospital staff, “You don’t know the power of my God.” She brought any minister available in the ICU to lay hands on me, anoint me with oil, and pray the prayer of faith. I was unaware of anything going on.
The doctors decided to repair my broken bones although I was still in a brain-dead coma. To their amazement, they discovered my neck was not broken anymore. The Holy Spirit had told my uncle two days earlier that my neck was healed.
