IT WAS A GENTLE TOUCH – PART 2

The attendants carried the stretcher on which lay the helpless woman and placed her on the platform. As she lay on the stretcher, on that stage, just as the service began, she had a vision.
“Something made me look up in the corner of the auditorium,” relates Amelia, “and even as I looked, I realized that the Lord had already loosened my neck; for the first time in many, many months I had turned it. I know now that there is a light in this corner, but to me, that day, there was no light. Instead, I saw something like a window, and there was a man standing there—I couldn’t see his face—dressed in a white robe, and on a table beside him was a book in which he was writing.

“I’d never been to a service before,” she continues, “so I didn’t know what to expect. I turned to my husband and said, ‘Who is that up there, I wonder?’ and he answered, ‘There’s nothing up there but a big light.’” Amelia knew then that only she was privileged to see the Figure in the white robe. “As I looked again, I could see that all the pages in the book beside him were filled with writing. He seemed to turn and turn and turn those pages one after the other, and it came to me that the book was about me and that the pages were filled with my sins. And then, as I continued to look, all the pages seemed to become white. It was as if God had erased all my sins and given me another chance to begin again.”

A Tender Touch

After the Lord had loosened her head, enabling her to see Him, one of the women workers at the service went over to her and said, “Will you come with me now?” She replied quickly, without thinking, “But I can’t walk.” And then she said, “Oh, yes I can! I know I can”—and in that instant, she had the distinct sensation that someone had lifted her off the stretcher. “It was a tender touch,” she says in smiling recollection. “So tender!”

On her feet now, the worker brought Amelia over to me. She turned, and walked halfway back, alone, to the stretcher, and back up again to me. I placed a chair for her on the platform, and she sat down in it with no trouble at all.

A New Life

The next morning found Amelia out in the yard tending her rose bushes. Her next-door neighbor, seeing her from her breakfast nook window, came out and said, “It’s uncanny. You look so much like Mrs. Holm—.” And then she realized that she was Mrs. Holmquist. White and shaken as if she had seen a ghost, all the woman could do was to keep on repeating, “I can’t believe it. I just can’t believe it!”

Since her healing, Amelia has not been sick a day, or taken so much as an aspirin tablet.

Scripture Reflection

“You restored me to health and let me live. Surely it was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish. In Your love You kept me from the pit of destruction; You have put all my sins behind Your back.”
Isaiah 38:16–17

“He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.”
1 Peter 2:24
