HONOURING GOD: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HONOUR GOD?

The greatest call to honour in Scripture is directed toward God Himself. He is the Creator, the source of all life, and the only One truly worthy of honour, reverence, and obedience.

Revelation 4:11 (NIV) – “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

But when we talk about honouring God, what comes to mind? Is it giving large offerings? Is it dancing passionately in church? Or is it something deeper; something that touches every part of our lives?

HONOUR GOD THROUGH OBEDIENCE

1 Samuel 2:30 (ESV) “Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.’”

1 Samuel 15:22 (NIV) “But Samuel replied: ‘Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.’”

Luke 6:46 (NIV) “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?”

So many people think they honour God because they give offerings, attend church faithfully, or serve in departments. But Jesus asked a hard question: “Why call me Lord, if you won’t obey Me?”

Obedience is not always seen in flamboyant actions, but it is the truest evidence of honour. When you do what pleases God, even when it’s hard, unpopular, or inconvenient, you show that His word means more to you than your comfort.

Ponder… Do you obey God fully, or only when it suits you? Do your actions show that you value His word more than your will?

Remember, He said, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples.” (John 8:31) You must read His word and obey His commands.

HONOUR HIS SON, JESUS

John 5:23 (NIV) “that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.”

John 12:26 (NET) If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow me, and where I am, my servant will be too. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

To honour God means to honour Jesus, His Son. There is no way to truly claim love or reverence for God while disregarding His Son or His teachings.

We honour Christ when we live by His words, follow His example, and represent Him well before men.

So reflect and ask yourself, “Do I treat the words of Jesus as suggestions or commands?”
