IT STARTED WITH A SOCCER GAME (PART 4)

Rising Persecution

Two days later, protesters broke into the building and stole microphones and speakers. The next month, Muslims burst into a church service where they intimidated the congregation and threatened to kill Pastor Hakim. A week later, protesters stormed the church building and vandalized it until police arrived. Later, the protesters returned and burned the building to the ground, leaving a charred mess of Bibles, hymnals, and a cross.

Unshaken Faith

The Christian community would not be deterred. They rebuilt the church. Again, Muslims extremists vandalized it. Again, the followers of Jesus persisted. When they were unable to perform baptisms in their church building, they baptized believers in kiddie pools and bathtubs in congregants’ homes. No matter what obstacles they face, they remain committed to obeying Jesus in whatever way possible.

Strength Through Tribulation

The Bible reminds us that difficulties are the default mode for Jesus followers. Accepting this, however, is not to admit defeat. As Acts 14:21-22 says, “When they [Paul and Barnabas] had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.” Believing this reality strengthens us as we persevere for the faith no matter where we live.
