DEFINITION OF FAITH – PISTIS (GK)

The Greek Meaning

‎The Greek noun often translated faith in our English Bible texts is ‘pistis’. Its verb form is ‘pisteuo’, which is often translated ‘believe’.
‎Pistis is the personification of good faith, trust, and reliability. It also means ‘firm persuasion’, ‘belief’, ‘assurance’, ‘firm conviction’, ‘faithfulness’.

The Nature of True Faith

‎True faith is not in, or for, a desired outcome. It is the ability to hold on to a promise, whether or not it is fulfilled.

Faith in God

‎Faith in God is being able to trust His word (both written and spoken), regardless of circumstances which may seem contrary to His promise.

The Witness of Hebrews 11

‎The whole of Hebrews 11 confirms this in its 39th verse:
‎These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.

The Centrality of Faith

‎Faith is very important—it is where everything begins and ends for mankind:
‎Ephesians 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—
‎Luke 18:8: Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?

Building Faith

‎Faith in God is built on what He reveals to us about Him. Therefore, to build our faith, we must first hear God’s word.
Romans 10:17: So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
‎Build your faith by studying His word today!
