  1. Teaching, instruction — Romans 12:7, Romans 15:4, 1 Timothy 4:13, 1 Timothy 5:17, 2 Timothy 3:16, Titus 2:7
  2. Teaching, that which is taught, doctrine — Ephesians 4:14, 1 Timothy 1:10, 1 Timothy 4:6, 2 Timothy 4:3, Titus 1:9, Titus 2:1

Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance:

Doctrine, learning, teaching.

From didaskalos, which means instruction (the function or the information), doctrine, learning, teaching.

When you hear doctrine, what do you think? A belief specific to your denomination alone? Although it is a common usage, that is an improper use of the word.
Doctrine simply means ‘teaching’. It does not refer to ‘deep’ exegeses or ‘big’ theological words alone. Rather, it includes teachings on things we would consider basic.

Hebrews 6:1-2 is a good example:

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permits.
