Thayer Definition
- laid down as a foundation, the foundation (of a building, wall, city)
- metaphorically the foundations, beginnings, first principles
- of institution or system of truth
When you think of the foundation, think of the most essential basics. If Christ, the Rock of our Salvation, is your foundation, then you should obey what He says. That’s fundamental to Christianity.
Luke 6:46-49
And why call me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever comes to me, and hears my sayings, and does them, I will show you to whom he is like: He is like a man who built a house, and dug deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that hears and does not, is like a man that without a foundation built a house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
Without the foundation, the building won’t stand. That’s why Abraham lived as a sojourner in the land of promise, looking forward to a city with the right foundations built by God (Hebrews 11:9-10)
Ephesians 2:19-22
Now, therefore, you are no more strangers and sojourners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone; In whom all the building fitly framed together grows unto a holy temple in the Lord: In whom you also are built together for a habitation of God through the Spirit.
The foundations contain the names of the apostles of the Lamb (Revelation 21:14). They are the foundation, patterned after the Lord Jesus who is the ‘Chief Cornerstone’. Beware of false teachers who destroy the building (your life) and guarantee its destruction by deleting stones from the foundation and teaching others to hear the word of the Lord without obeying it.
Psalm 11:3-4
If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD’S throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids test, the children of men.
