detestation, aversion, or intense dislike
Matthew 5:43-44
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”
Jesus teaches us to love rather than hate. Yet, we see another statement of His that appears contrary to this instruction:
Luke 14:26
“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life— he cannot be My disciple.
We’re not meant to harbour hatred towards others. But if we must choose between those we love, and the will of the Lord, we must choose Him. As a disciple, your primary allegiance should be given to the Lord, not family or loved ones.
Matthew 10:34-38
“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.”
1 John 3:13
“Do not be surprised, My brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.”
