a. properly, “the movable stick or tricker (`trigger’) of a trap, trap-stick; a trap, snare; any impediment placed in the way and causing one to stumble or fall” (a stumbling block, occasion of stumbling): (a rock of offence), i.e. a rock which is a cause of stumbling.

Jesus gives a harsh warning in Matthew 18 about the danger of causing others to stumble – especially when they are young (in faith or in age).
“If anyone causes one of these little ones those who believe in Me-to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” Matthew 18:6
There are many stumbling blocks in the world today. But that doesn’t justify behavior that leads others astray. Your words, your dressing, your conduct – what does it say? Does it point to the path of life, or the destructive ‘broad’ way?
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God-even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. 1 Corinthians 10:31-33
Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. Romans 14:13
