He whispers, “This is the way, walk in it,”
But I call His voice the chains of a king too strict,
Forgetting Eden’s fruit once bit,
Brings thorns, and dust, and days grown sick.
I follow the hunger of my own desire,
Trading the narrow path for the mirage of fire;
Like Israel craving Egypt’s bread,
Though Heaven rained manna where angels tread.
The road of life fades into tangled green,
Where shadows mock what might have been.
I wander months with no star to guide,
Till mercy parts the forest wide.
He sends His searchers-lanterns lit,
Like the Shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine for the one unfit.
They find me bruised, with trembling knees,
And carry me home through the stormy trees.
Yet still, the lawless root clings deep,
Like Jonah fleeing the vow I keep.
I vow to stay, but soon I roam,
A prodigal with a restless home.
Oh Faithful One, who will not tire,
Though I leap again into the pit of mire-
Your compass points to life’s true gate,
Though I rebel, You still await.
Till the day the jungle fades away,
And grace has taught my feet to stay.
For though my heart is prone to stray,
Your steadfast love will not decay.
