IS THE LAW OBSOLETE? (Pt 16-17)

Is the Law Obsolete? (Part 16-17)

Thinking Thursday 99-100

PART 16:

Romans 7:15-21 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

Romans 7:22‭-‬23‭, ‬25 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

See the battle between laws? Think about it!

PART 17:

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus  *the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from ** the law of sin and death. For what ***the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1‭-‬4 NIV

BACK TO THE BEGINNING: IS THE LAW OBSOLETE? (PART 1-3)

Did you see 3 renditions of the law at work here?

i) The inherited law of sin and death we struggle with in our fleshly nature that makes us do evil that we would rather not do; – …But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. (Rom.7:21-23); and,

ii) The righteous law of God given through Moses which provides for God’s requirements. But His people lacked the ability to fulfil it due to the presence of the inherited law of sin above which is associated with the sin nature Adam passed down to us. …the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh – Romans 8:3. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man – Romans 7:21.

iii) the law of the Spirit of life in Jesus, accessible to all who come to God through Him. The person who is IN Christ Jesus can through Jesus’ sacrifice and strength found within Him, meet the righteous requirement of the law of Moses

To be in Him is the key!
