Source: Thayer’s Greek Lexicon of the New Testament
Author: Joseph H. Thayer

"...who gave Himself on our behalf, that He might redeem us from all iniquity and purify a people for His own possession, zealous of good works.” Titus 2:14

Thayer Definitions:

  1. the condition of one without law – either because ignorant of it or because of violating it.
  2. contempt and violation of law, iniquity, wickedness

The Lord Jesus came to save us from lawless living, and make us into people who are excited about doing His will. If, as followers of Jesus, we have been redeemed from lawlessness, why should we continue in it? Love for God is incompatible with the spirit of lawlessness.

Matthew 24:11-13

Then, many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

John 14:15

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.

1 John 5:3

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

1 John 2:3-6

Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

Matthew 7:21-27

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

Sin and the Child of God
1 John 3:4-7

Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.
