- summoned, called to one’s side, especially called to one’s aid
- one who pleads another’s cause before a judge, a pleader, counsel for defense, legal assistant, an advocate
- one who pleads another’s cause with one, an intercessor
- in the widest sense, a helper, succourer, aider, assistant
Among Jewish writers, this Greek word came to have a number of meanings.
A ‘good deed’ was called a paraclete or advocate, likewise ‘repentance’ and ‘good works’:
“The works of benevolence and mercy done by the people of Israel in this world become agents of peace and intercessors (paracletes) between them and their Father in heaven.” The sin offering, for example, is a paraclete going between God and man for man’s sin. In the same way that the Lord Jesus is our Advocate (‘parakletos’ — 1 John 2:1) and makes intercession on our behalf (Hebrews 7:25), the Holy Spirit.
