When Louise walked in, the sick woman said, “I heard the broadcast, and I know about the woman dying of cancer of the liver,” and then she began to cry, and said, “I’m not afraid to die; just don’t let the children at home ever be separated. That’s all that worries me.” She closed her eyes then and said nothing more.
The Miracle Moment
Next day at broadcast time, Louise was with her mother, kneeling beside the bed as they listened together -“I heard Miss Kuhlman say, I feel impelled to pray again for the woman at Tarentum Hospital dying of cancer of the liver.'” And suddenly it happened.
“In the middle of the prayer,” reports Louise, “the power went through mother,” and I couldn’t hold her in bed, so violently was she shaking and crying. A nurse came running in, and they began giving her hypodermics. They didn’t know what was wrong with her, but of course I knew what was happening. She was under the power. From that moment on, Edith began to pick up. The pain left; she began to eat ravenously, and immediately began to gain weight—as much as three pounds a day. The doctors, frankly incredulous at this weight gain recorded by the nurses, proceeded to weigh her themselves each day. She was out of the hospital, hale and hearty, within a matter of days.
Medical Confirmation
As Dr. Cross was to say: “There certainly must be something to your preacher lady.” But medically speaking, such a healing was impossible. In the event, then, that her apparent recovery was merely a spectacular remission of the disease, Dr. Cross urged her to go to Boston to the clinic. He pointed out that the doctors there were already familiar with her case, and after examining her, might think it advisable to operate, notwithstanding what appeared to be her cure.
At first she and her family demurred. They knew she had been healed by the power of God—and furthermore, what about the expense involved? They estimated that it would cost in the neighborhood of $3,000 to have this operation performed, which they were convinced wasn’t necessary. And then it developed that the Miners’ Welfare would finance the operation. Edith finally agreed, saying: “All right. If they want to pay $3,000 to find out that I don’t have cancer, let them go ahead! At least this will prove to anyone who has ever doubted, that God performs miracles of healing.”
Proof of Divine Healing
Her husband took her to Boston and stayed the entire time, losing nineteen working days. Due to the extraordinary circumstances of the case, Dr. Lahey himself operated. No trace of cancer anywhere in this woman’s body was found—only scar tissue indicating that surgery had already been done. It had—by the Great Physician Himself, who had preceded Dr. Lahey.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
