“We realize now,” says Harry, “that it was the Holy Spirit Himself who kept that call from being completed, for it was that very day that a friend of ours who is a nurse and knew all along that I had cancer, dropped in to visit us.” It was this nurse who told the Stephensons about Kathryn Kuhlman’s services and the power of God to heal.
“Why don’t you send a telegram to her, Mildred,” she asked Mrs. Stephenson, “and request her to pray for Harry!” The Stephensons had never heard the radio broadcasts; had never attended a service; indeed, they had never even heard the name of Kathryn Kuhlman before this. They were frankly skeptical.
The Turning Point
“Well,” said the nurse, “you’ve tried everything else, and nothing can help Harry now in the way of medical treatment. Why don’t you try this?” The next day—Thursday—the telegram was sent.
“Friday turned out to be the most blessed day of my life. This was the day of my rebirth, my life in Christ, and the promise of life eternal,” Harry recollects. The pain that morning was almost intolerable. He was lying on the couch on the sun porch, listening to the radio. Mildred was in the kitchen, and Audrey was upstairs praying for him.
“Then,” he recalls, “over the air, I heard the voice of Kathryn Kuhlman call me by name in earnest prayer.”
Scarcely aware of what he was doing, Harry began praying with her: “Dear Lord, have mercy on me. Forgive me all that I have done wrong all my life.” In an unconscious gesture of supplication, he put out his hand, and implored, “Let me be one of those you touch today.”
The Moment of Healing
“Suddenly the power of the Holy Spirit came upon me, and the pain left instantly and completely,” recalls Harry. “And I began to shake and sob and cry out. My wife and daughter didn’t know about the working of the Holy Spirit, I scared them half to death!”
They both believed that Harry Stephenson was dying. His daughter went up to her bedroom and got her Bible, and started to pray.
Mildred, in a panic, wanted to get a doctor immediately, but Harry prevented her. He did not at once identify what was happening to him as the working of the Holy Spirit, for he had never before experienced it. But he did know that he no longer had pain and that he was not dying. He felt that something wonderful was happening to him, and it was; he was not only receiving God’s healing for his physical body, but a far greater miracle was taking place — the salvation of his soul.
The Miracle Confirmed
“And then,” he said, “I heard Miss Kuhlman say, Eat in the name of Jesus.” Harry was flabbergasted. Eat? Eat anything he wanted after his long, gradual starvation, and after thirty days when nothing, not even water, had stayed down?
After his shaking had stopped, and the power had left his body, Harry was to turn to his wife and say, “You know, Mildred, I’m hungry as can be. Please fix me something to eat. And do you know what I want? Some fried eggs!”
He had a cup of tea, a slice of toast, and two fried eggs. They stayed down, and as Harry says with a grin, “I thought I never tasted anything so good in my entire life!”
When that evening at suppertime his wife asked him what he’d like to eat, he replied, “Hot dogs and onions and all the trimmings, and I’m starved! You’d better make me three.” She did, and he ate them all.
“If I’d thought the fried eggs were good, those hot dogs were out of this world!” he said with a smile.
A Life Transformed
Mildred just looked at him in amazement. “How are you suddenly able to eat like this?” she asked. Harry’s answer was simple: “Because the Lord touched me,” he said.
All these happened exactly 21 days after he was discharged from the Veterans Administration hospital to die. Harry regained his lost weight — in fact, before too long had passed he weighed 196 pounds and had to reduce, as he had difficulty in climbing around on his job!
“After many years of smoking, drinking, swearing, and every other sin possible, I was instantaneously changed — made a new creature in Christ. My only desire from that moment on was to serve Him with all my being,” Harry says, and this he continues to do.
Through his personal witness and changed life, he has brought many to Christ, including his entire family.
And if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.
