Amelia Holmquist was a Swedish Lutheran who was totally disabled from arthritis. Every nerve in her body was affected. The doctor had prescribed the usual treatment—heat, massage, drugs, certain stipulated exercise to maintain normal joint function—but it all seemed unavailing. The pain continued and the stiffness increased until all of her joints were by now grossly deformed, and the day finally arrived when she became entirely disabled and completely bedridden.
A Ray of Hope
“It was at this point,” she recalls, “that a neighbor dropped in to see me. She brought me a little red book called The Lord’s Healing Touch written by someone named Kathryn Kuhlman, and she told me that Miss Kuhlman broadcasts over the radio every day, and to be sure to listen.” Amelia read the booklet and began to listen to the broadcasts, and as she says, another world opened up to her.
Faith in Action
One day, after listening to the broadcast, she asked her husband if on the following Sunday he would take her by ambulance to the service being held in Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown, Ohio. He refused—first because of his lack of faith, and second because he genuinely felt that the distance involved in the trip was too great to undertake. “So then,” Amelia says, “I began to pray to God that He would bring Miss Kuhlman closer to Akron, so I could get to her, and He answered my prayer. A month later a service was scheduled at Canton, Ohio, and I knew I could get there easily enough.”
The ambulance was arranged for, and early that Sunday morning Amelia awakened her husband and asked him to dress her. He was aghast. “Why?” he wanted to know. “People don’t go places on stretchers in ambulances dressed!”
“Because,” his wife said, her face alight, “I know that today is my day to be healed. I’ll get up and walk away from that stretcher, and when I do, I’ll have to have on some clothes.” Disapproving, skeptical, but in order to placate her as he would an unreasonable child, he proceeded to hunt in the closet for a dress. Finally he found one, dressed her, and combed her hair. They then carried her out and safely ensconced her in the ambulance with her husband beside her.
A Confident Faith
The ambulance was just about to start off when she called to the driver, “Oh, wait—don’t go yet. We forgot my coat.” Her husband looked at her incredulously. “Your coat,” he said. “What on earth do you want your coat for? You’re covered with blankets from head to toe!”
“Yes,” she replied, “but I can’t wear blankets when I go home. Please get my coat.”
Staring at her for a moment, completely speechless, he went into the house and came back with her coat over his arm.
On that Sunday, never to be forgotten by either Amelia Holmquist or her husband, the ambulance drove up to the back door of the auditorium.
