“I stopped in my tracks, and answered aloud, ‘Yes, I have.’ The voice I heard was that of Kathryn Kuhlman.”
This was the first time Jean had ever heard the broadcast. It was either a Thursday or a Friday, and service was announced for that afternoon. She didn’t stop to think twice. Getting Nancy ready and bundling Ronnie up, they all left for Carnegie Hall.
After the service, Jean went home inspired and elated over what she had seen and felt at Carnegie Auditorium that afternoon. She was indescribably thrilled over having witnessed something that was entirely new to her: the power of God in action.
When Elmer came home from work that evening, Jean met him at the door, bubbling over with happiness and hope. Her husband hadn’t seen her that way since little Ronnie had been born. She told him of the service and asked his permission to write out a prayer request for their little son’s healing. Elmer’s response was instantaneous: “Sure—go ahead,” he said—”Let’s do it together right now!” Immediately afterward, Elmer went out with the letter and mailed it.
From that time on, every morning found Jean on her knees throughout the broadcast. She would kneel beside Ronnie, holding in her hands his little crippled leg and twisted foot, “And each time,” Jean says, “I could feel his leg and foot twitch and jump as the power of God actually went through them.”
Ronnie kept getting better and better. When he was about a year old, he could stand, but his leg still turned out. Jean continued to pray, confident that his healing would soon be complete. However, as she prayed, her eyes constantly strayed to Ronnie’s crippled leg, as if waiting to see the miracle take place.
A Husband’s Insight
It was Elmer who, with remarkable insight, said to her, “Maybe you’re going about this the wrong way. Perhaps you should stop looking at his leg all the time you’re praying. You act as if you’re questioning God’s promise to heal; as if you’re challenging Him to hurry up; as if maybe you’re afraid He won’t. It seems to me you should think and believe that the leg is already healed.”
The Message That Changed Everything
The next day during the broadcast, Jean listened intently to every word that I had to say during my little heart-to-heart talk. Surely I was led by the Holy Spirit to speak to that precious mother, for over and over I emphasized the fact that fear was one of the greatest enemies that an individual could take into his life. I stressed the fact that we lose our fear by fastening our attention, not on the thing to be feared, or on the fear of this fear, but on Christ who is our deliverance from fear.
Not knowing that there in the kitchen of her home was a mother who was hanging on every word that I was speaking, I continued, “Take your eyes off of circumstances; take your eyes off of conditions; take your eyes off of the affliction and fix your eyes on Jesus, for at the heart of your faith is a person, the very Son of the living God, whose power is greater than any enemy you face; greater than circumstances; greater than the problems in your life.”
The Miracle
In an instant, Jean Crider took her child in her arms and stood him in a corner of the room by himself.
On her knees, her eyes on God and not on her baby; her eyes on Christ and not on his poor little club foot, she looked up and prayed: “Oh, Lord—PLEASE LET HIM WALK—please let his first steps be straight and strong.”
As she rose from her knees, she looked at Ronnie. Without really thinking, she held out her arms to him. And the miracle came to pass. He walked toward her—perfectly—legs and feet both strong and straight, and those little legs have remained strong and straight to this very day.
Those who know Your name trust in You, for You, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek You.
