I hope I’m not moving too fast, darting through this wilderness, with my head in the cloud, following it around, because I’m driving under the influence of the wine, and I take a glass or two when I remember you.
I once was a creature of the night, a dead man walking, and dying of thirst with a craving for blood, too afraid to walk in broad daylight, because it scorched my flesh, but you made your bed under the wine press, sang a hymn and raised a toast at your dying breath.
That day, the sun, moon, and stars all bowed to the greater light, and darkness stretched its wings all over the land. A perfect shade was made for slain men like me to roam the streets at an unusual hour, dragging shattered limbs all the way to the fountain at calvary.
There, a banquet was prepared for the dead who couldn’t pay back, a gory but glorious feast. We drank wine from your veins, tasted true blood from your vine, ate your flesh and left no crumbs, and no longer did we feel the painful hunger or gruesome thirst.
So while I’m on this maze of a journey to immortality, staggering as I keep pace with the wind, and dying to keep my heart beating to your tune, I REMEMBER a time when there was no hope to lose.
Nonetheless, you’ve squeezed out the vinegar from the pages of this story and drunk it, and rewritten it anew with your sweetener, O fruit hanging on the tree of life, a tale as old time ageing like fine wine.
