Definition
Full of fire; fiery, ignited: Darts filled with inflammable substances and set on fire.
Ephesians 6:16
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
The flaming arrows (also called “fiery darts”) used in ancient warfare were pitch-tipped arrows set ablaze. With bows, these burning arrows could be shot over the city walls to set the city on fire. The shield of faith protects us from the flaming arrows (thoughts and temptations) that Satan throws at our minds.
Fiery darts include doubt, fear, lust, envy, pride, greed, bitterness, and other sinful thoughts that attack our souls.
When Satan fires a fiery dart at you, you will be tempted to accept it and fan it into a flame by developing the idea in your mind/heart, and acting on it.
How Do We Extinguish These Flames?
By choosing to believe (obey) the word of God, rather than yield to the temptation.
Romans 15:4
For everything that was written in former times was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and through encouragement of the scriptures we may have hope.
