They came with robes and their hands raised high,
Eyes glinting bright with a holy lie,
And coins that clinked like hissing snakes,
For they were gods of the holy fakes.
“Step right up, buy grace and might!
The Lord’s own oil, the Spirit’s light!
A touch, a prayer, and a magic fee
A bargain for even eternity!”
The crowd cheered and paid the toll,
Sold faith itself; heart and soul,
Not seeing how the serpent’s hiss
Curled in the folds of what “holy bliss.”
For prophets mad with glittered greed
Forgotten were the Shepherd’s creed.
Forgotten was the price once paid,
When Truth was nailed and Love was slayed.
But the heavens roared and the skies turned dark,
A voice that split their greed apart:
“Who dares to sell what I have given?
Who mocks the grace of the highest heavens?”
A mighty wind that tore their robes,
Shattered altars and rocked their globes.
There they stood, their gold turned dust
Their temples cracked and their power crushed.
Like Balaam struck and Simon’s shame,
Their madness met the flames of blame.
For God alone the gift bestows,
And thieves of grace reap fire’s throes.
So let it be the fool’s reward:
To sell what freely flows from the Lord.
For prophets mad and blind with greed
Must reap the harvest of their evil seed.
