Prayer and Divine Favor
Her fellow believers began to fast and pray, asking for God’s favor in Samrita’s case. If Uda told the court she had left Islam, Samrita could be sentenced to three years in a walled detention center, euphemistically called a “purification center.” There, Muslims would try to convert her back to Islam. If she refused to go to the center, she would face prison.
During the trial, the judge repeatedly asked Uda why he wanted a divorce. Strangely, he refused to answer, even though doing so would have likely meant a prison sentence for the wife who he felt betrayed him by rejecting Islam.
The judge granted the divorce, awarding the two children to Uda with no visitation rights for Samrita. But she would not go to prison.
A New Life in Christ
Samrita now attends a Malaysian church with sixty members. She and her father are closer than ever. His love of Jesus became their love of Jesus. She has forgiven her father and Uda for abusing her. Although Uda allows Samrita to visit the children, he has warned her not to share her faith with them. Despite the risk of losing all contact with them, she has the courage to do it anyway.
“With help from the Lord, I will have the right to take care of my kids,” she said. Meanwhile, she lives with the confidence that nothing is beyond God’s power. She has seen that Christ indeed makes all things new, as 2 Corinthians 5:17 promises: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
A Symbol of Courage
She is reminded of this wonderful truth each time she puts on the wooden cross her father gave her. It gives her courage to trust her future to Jesus.
