The Bonnkes Reunite After the War
The Bonnkes reunite after three and one-half years Hermann had been a prisoner of war, a captured soldier. When his military service records had been produced and examined by the British, they saw that he had never joined the Nazi party and he had been released. Finally, they were being transferred from Denmark to British control at Pöppendorf. Once there, their papers were duly stamped and noted, their belongings searched. As the final barbed-wire gates to his compound were unlocked, Reinhard knew his time had come. Afterwards, Hermann lay for a while among his children, laughing and crying all at the same time. They hugged and laughed and cried with him, unable to use real words to say just how they had missed him.
Do You Believe You Have Been Saved, Reinhard?
Do you believe you have been saved, Reinhard? Later on, Reinhard began stealing money from his mother’s purse. His mother caught him and warned, “Thou shalt not steal. When we break God’s law, it is sin, Reinhard.” She asked, “Would you like to receive Jesus as your Savior and be forgiven?” “Oh yes, Momma, I would.” Reinhard repeated a prayer after her, acknowledging that he was a sinner and accepting Jesus as his Savior. Thereafter, it was his new birthday. Reinhard felt as if a thousand pounds had been lifted from his shoulders.
Street Preaching and the First Soul Won
One day Reinhard took his guitar and headed to a street corner in downtown Glückstadt. Then he reached for his Bible and preached the simple invitation to receive Jesus. To his amazement, one man knelt and prayed the sinner’s prayer with him right there on the street.
It Works!
Afterwards, he raced home as fast as his legs would carry him. “Father, Father! It works! A man came to hear me preach today, and he accepted Jesus!”
How Do You Know That God Has Called You?
How do you know that God has called you? Soon after, God spoke to him in his heart. “Reinhard, one day you will preach My gospel in Africa.” “Father, God spoke to me in church today and said I must preach the gospel in Africa!” His father said, “Your brother Martin will be my heir.” “But Father, God has called me to preach in Africa.” He scowled. “How do you know that God has called you?” Therefore, all he had was the evidence of his heart.
A Calling Questioned
Even beyond his home, doubt followed him. As guests often did, they would ask, “What are you going to be when you grow up?” “I’m going to be a missionary to Africa.” “Children go through stages you know. They usually grow out of it.” This hurt him. He wanted his calling to be taken seriously. To be continued…
