The Early Church as a Missionary Model
Section Two of The Enquiry described the powerful move of the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts, where thousands were added to the church daily (Acts 2:47). Carey reminded readers that early missionaries were responsible for spreading Christianity to regions like England, Germany, Spain, France, Egypt, and Libya.
A Survey of the Present State of the World
Section Three, titled “A Survey of the Present State of the World,” gave a detailed account of global populations, religions, and locations based on Carey’s eight years of study. British scholars were impressed by its depth—nothing like it had been written before. Carey noted that most countries had “no written language and consequently no Bible,” and were guided by “childish customs and traditions.” With a passion for languages, Carey longed to provide the Bible in written form to these unreached peoples. Even critics of foreign missions were moved by his deep conviction.
The Practical Cost of Obedience
Sections Four and Five addressed the practical side of missions: transporting missionaries, surviving in foreign lands, and securing financial support. Carey challenged fellow Christians: “I question whether we are justified in staying here, while so many are perishing without means of grace in other lands!” He described missionaries as tireless workers—teaching, exhorting, and constantly praying for the people they served, all while depending on the Holy Spirit.
A Call That Could Not Be Ignored
Carey closed the booklet with a bold challenge:
“Surely it is worthwhile to lay ourselves out with all our might, in promoting the cause and kingdom of Christ!”
