The Greek Meaning
The Greek noun often translated faith in our English Bible texts is ‘pistis’. Its verb form is ‘pisteuo’, which is often translated ‘believe’.
Pistis is the personification of good faith, trust, and reliability. It also means ‘firm persuasion’, ‘belief’, ‘assurance’, ‘firm conviction’, ‘faithfulness’.
The Nature of True Faith
True faith is not in, or for, a desired outcome. It is the ability to hold on to a promise, whether or not it is fulfilled.
Faith in God
Faith in God is being able to trust His word (both written and spoken), regardless of circumstances which may seem contrary to His promise.
The Witness of Hebrews 11
The whole of Hebrews 11 confirms this in its 39th verse:
These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.
The Centrality of Faith
Faith is very important—it is where everything begins and ends for mankind:
Ephesians 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—
Luke 18:8: Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?
Building Faith
Faith in God is built on what He reveals to us about Him. Therefore, to build our faith, we must first hear God’s word.
Romans 10:17: So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
