Faith Under Fire
The next day, at a mass funeral for those who died, the gunmen returned. They opened fire on the mourners. Among those killed were a national senator and a leader of the Plateau State House of Assembly. Adversity is unavoidable in life, but it does not necessitate defeat. The Word of God never promises Jesus followers a comfortable and secure life. It promises that, despite the inevitable storms of life, God is bigger than such storms. “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
A Pastor’s Perseverance
Armed with the strength of God’s Word, Pastor John continues to pray for those in his church family who lost loved ones during the attack. He continues to trust God and serve him. “My request is that God should help me in my life as a Christian and as a pastor,” he said, “to be able to do what God has called me to do well and to fulfill the purpose that God has for my life.” Perseverance is among the go-to tools God has placed in the toolbox of those who serve him.
Shaped Through Suffering
Perseverance tests us, steels us, and forms us into the people God wants us to be. Is this process easy? No. Just as sand on a beach results from the tumult of tides and waves, our character is shaped by the pain and difficulties we’ve endured for the cause of Jesus. When trouble comes our way-and it will, as Pastor John knows so well-let’s not run from it or retaliate. Let’s trust in God and endure in faith, so we can fulfill the purpose God has for our lives.
