A Test of Faith
At 6:00 a.m. on that terrible day, gunshots jolted Danjuma awake. Like everyone else in his small village, Danjuma ran for his life. But the pungent smoke from houses set on fire choked him, and escape from the attack by nearly one thousand Islamic insurgents proved impossible for the thirteen-year-old boy. Danjuma remembers all too well the pain of a machete slicing through the left side of his head. But he recalls nothing, thankfully, of what happened next. Not the machete blows to his left arm. Not the gouging out of his eye with a knife. Not the cutting off of his genitals. He only vaguely remembers the disbelief and excitement of the men who had been digging his grave when they realized he was still alive.
The Power of Forgiveness
Twenty-three Nigerian Christians died that day. Thirty-eight were injured. The staff at the hospital fifteen miles away where Danjuma was taken could not believe he was among the survivors. “They were astonished that this boy would come back alive after all of this,” said Hadilia Adamu, a hospital manager. “He bled so much. It is a miracle.” Now Danjuma has the nickname “Miracle,” not only because he lived, but also because he did not choose the path of bitterness. He feels less sorry for himself than for those who maimed him. “I forgive them because they don’t know what they are doing,” he said, echoing words he had read in the Bible. “If they had love, they wouldn’t behave that way.”
Trusting God Through Suffering
His forgiving attitude and abiding joy provide a powerful example to us. His story reminds us of God’s desire for all who follow him to forgive and live in peace. In that sense, Danjuma brings to mind Isaiah 11:6: “The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.” Danjuma, the boy with the peaceful smile, truly leads us in living out the words of Jesus each and every day. Jesus calls us to love and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). Injustice can lead to bitterness, but Danjuma chose forgiveness despite great suffering. He continues to rely on God and trusts Him to handle everything. His example shows the freedom and hope found in forgiveness. We should pray for those who suffer for their faith (Galatians 6:17). Likewise, we must face our trials with forgiving hearts and trust in God.
