Musa’s Family in Danger
When the men left, Musa’s wife insisted that he leave Somalia; and, reluctantly, he traveled to a refugee camp in Kenya; but, two days later, while Helima was making lunch for herself and the boys, the henchmen arrived at Musa’s home. When they discovered that he had left, two men grabbed Omar and Ali, tied their feet together, and blindfolded them. Somehow, Helima and Salat escaped and eventually reconnected with Musa in Kenya; but, their two older sons would pay the price for what their killers called “the sins of their father.”
They were beheaded; and, that same month, eight other Christians were martyred in Somalia for their faith. A month later, in August, a fourteen-year-old boy who had converted from İslam was shot and killed. In September, a woman was shot and killed because she had six Bibles. In a world where most people “play it safe” to avoid suffering, many of our devoted Christian brothers and sisters suffer atrocities and die sacrificially because they love Christ above all else. Like Musa and his family, they take to heart Paul’s words: “For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for His sake.” (Philippians 1:29)
Living Sacrificially for Christ
Jesus’ followers in communities and countries hostile to Jesus understand suffering for Christ’s sake to be a normal part of the Christian life; and, so, they willingly choose Christ above all else. They remain fearlessly and sacrificially faithful to the sovereign God they serve. We can never predict how people will react to what we say or do. We do not know what the consequences will be; but to refuse to live for Christ above all else is to let go of the hand of God and give the enemy control. What a privilege we have to stand with these brothers and sisters who live out their faith – they are living examples to us of God’s mighty power, and they demonstrate amazing trust in the God who is faithful to those who serve him.
May we be faithful to pray for courage, guidance, and wisdom; and, may we pray for persecuted Jesus’ followers who can teach us so much about living sacrificially for God.
