A Bold Rescue
Eventually, her parents began letting her out for short periods of time; beyond that, they still treated her much like a prisoner. One of Hoda’s cousins was a Jesus follower, although few people knew it. Learning of Hoda’s predicament, he mentioned his cousin’s plight to Naasir, a friend in his tightly knit Christian circle. Naasir was inspired by Hoda’s faith and frustrated by her lack of freedom; and, after contemplating her situation and praying about it, he determined to rescue her; and, so, for two years, he saved money in order to liberate her from her bedroom prison. For two years, he prayed about his plan; and, finally, it was time to put it into motion.
With her permission, he asked her parents for Hoda’s hand in marriage. Her parents knew little about him – only that he was tall, dark haired, and handsome. They presumed that he was a Muslim although they never asked. Deciding that this was the perfect solution for ridding their daughter of her “infidel” status, they consented to the marriage. “Happily ever after” stories are not common among Jesus’ followers in Egypt, but Naasir and Hoda fell in love, were married, and vowed to do all that they could to share their faith in Christ with others; but, the furnace of persecution remained hot.
Life Under Pressure
Muslims often harassed and mocked them; Muslim landlords evicted them when they learned of their Christian faith. The birth of their son was a joyful blessing, yet one that added pressure to find a stable living situation. After a move to yet another apartment, their worn and wobbly furniture fell apart. They had no food. The weather turned cold. They slept on the floor.
