Challenges at Home and School
In addition to the ever-present threat of being found out by authorities, they still experience friction with their Muslim families; and, now that their son attends school, they face a new and difficult challenge. Every day, he encounters resistance to the Jesus-based life and faith he experiences at home. “He is confused because he hears something in the school and different things in the house,” said Naasir. “In school, they teach him that Christians are infidels and even to curse Christ; but home, we try to correct this.”
Living the Theology of Pain
Despite serious opposition, Naasir and Hoda courageously embody Mark 8:35: “For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel will save it” (NKJV). They are reminded constantly that the Word of God never promises “happily ever after” endings – just strength and wisdom from God for whatever comes their way. We can learn so much from them.
“In Egypt, our theology is the theology of pain,” Naasir explained. “We do not know the theology of prosperity, but we know Jesus.” They know that hope, contentment, and peace can be found only in Jesus so instead of spending their lives trying to construct a “happily ever after” scenario for themselves, they have the courage to trust God for whatever lies ahead. They are committed to do His will, not their will.
