1994 TORONTO GLOBAL REVIVAL

THE BEGINNING OF THE TORONTO BLESSING

In January 1994, the Toronto Airport Vineyard Church experienced a powerful outpouring of revival, now known as the Toronto Blessing or the Father’s Blessing. It began on the evening Randy Clark spoke as a guest of Pastor John Arnott. What was planned to last a few days turned into a move of God that profoundly touched lives almost daily for far longer.

As it became clear that God was moving, Randy Clark extended his visit to over six weeks. When he finally left, John and Carol Arnott continued hosting meetings six days a week, every week, for more than a dozen years.

THE NATURE OF THE MEETINGS

These meetings included worship, testimony, preaching, Gospel invitations, and a vital time to pray for attenders to be touched by God. This led to countless physical healings and deep emotional restoration. The very presence of God was often described as amazing. Abundant joy and refreshing were the hallmark gifts given by God.

IMPACT ON LEADERS AND BELIEVERS

The Arnotts were themselves rejuvenated, and the revival deeply impacted leaders like Heidi Baker, Eleanor Mumford, and Steve Hill. Despite the joy, the Toronto Blessing drew criticism. Unusual manifestations falling down, shaking, speaking in tongues, and spontaneous laughter made many uncomfortable.

CONTROVERSY AND HUNGER FOR GOD

Reports claimed that over 300 visitors received gold or silver dental fillings instantaneously in their mouths, which stretched belief for some. Still, multitudes hungered for more of God and traveled to Toronto to witness it themselves.

GROWTH AND GLOBAL INFLUENCE

By the end of 1994, the small church had grown to over 1,000 members, and over 900 guests had made decisions to follow Christ. Demons were cast out, faith was restored, and people gained boldness for Jesus. Over 4,000 pastors and leaders from around the world came to Toronto in the first year alone.

SPREAD OF THE REVIVAL FIRE

What made this revival especially astounding was how the revival fire spread to visitors’ home churches. By October 1994, over 3,000 churches had been impacted. By 1995, more than 11,000 churches had been ignited worldwide.

LASTING FRUIT OF THE REVIVAL

Denominational barriers fell as believers focused on their Savior. Moral behavior improved, peace was restored, and global intercessory prayer multiplied fourfold. Above all, people’s love for God deepened, transformed by a fresh experience of the Father’s tender, joy filled love.
