Hermann Bonnke Speaks at the Largest Crowd of His Life
Hermann Bonnke speaks at the Largest Crowd of his Life In 1979 their team traveled to Zimbabwe to organize a five-month campaign scheduled for 1980. They set up the 10,000-seat tent in Harare. Reinhard’s father traveled with him and sat beside him on the platform. On the opening night the tent was almost full. Reinhard gave his father the microphone to greet the largest crowd he had ever addressed. He told how he had not taken Reinhard’s call to Africa seriously and spoke of Grandma Gerda Bauszuss’ vision of Reinhard sharing bread with a large crowd in Africa. When Reinhard gave the invitation, 3,000 souls crowded the front. He saw his father’s eyes full of tears. On the final night, 5,000 new converts pressed forward to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and they spoke in tongues.
A Spiritual Desert where Witchcraft ruled
Spiritual warfare intensified with attacks by satanists and demons disrupting services in Gazankulu. People let out chilling shrieks; others wandered moaning. The sinister atmosphere robbed the team of sleep. Reinhard recognized a tremendous supernatural battle as the Holy Spirit moved to set people free. One young girl entered the tent and went into a frenzy. Prayer seemed ineffective. Pastor Kolisang found fetishes and witchcraft items in her hut. When they were removed and burned, the girl became completely free.
Bonnke in Uganda
Reinhard traveled to Uganda in 1983, emerging from Idi Amin’s notorious regime into a hopeful climate for religious freedom, yet a prophetic warning troubled him, leading him to pray, “I do not want to see one life lost, Father, in Jesus’ name.” Meetings in Kampala saw many responses and healings manifested. After returning to South Africa, he saw the test installation of the big tent where meetings recorded 8,000 decisions for Christ. At the dedication, Kenneth Copeland prophesied that one million souls would respond in a single meeting and that the Berlin Wall would come down. When insurance delays hindered replacing the destroyed covering, Copeland gave $800,000 for a new tent top.
Thousands accept Christ in Cape Town
The massive tent was destroyed in one night when violent winds shredded the fabric, widely perceived as a demonic assault. The committee proceeded after the prophecy: “My glory shall be the canopy.” God held the weather back three weeks. Crowds grew from 25,000 to 75,000. Crimes ceased, weapons were surrendered, miracles occurred, and 29,000 conversions were recorded. Despite global success, his brothers ridiculed the ministry. Reinhard responded with patience, gentleness, and continued love, believing they would be won without confrontation. To be continued
