Winfried, Gaby and the equipment safe
Winfried gathered 100 Christian volunteers to dismantle and pack the platform and sound equipment. Explosions continued, and some soldiers hesitated, but a Christian soldier assisted them and also gathered other soldiers for the trip. At 4:30 a.m., they set out for Lagos with military escort before curfew lifted. They passed barricades and riot-torn neighborhoods unharmed. At the city limits the escort vanished, leaving them to travel the 700-mile road alone through Muslim cities. Yet they encountered no challenge. When they arrived in Lagos with the children and equipment rescued, the staff who had feared them dead erupted in celebration.
Massive Growth in Gospel Campaigns
750,000 registered decisions for Christ in 1988
Meanwhile, the ministry continued to expand. Until 1987 Reinhard kept no official record of conversions. After meeting Vinson Synan, he adopted systematic crowd counting and official registration, studying the methods of Billy Graham. The process began in Tamale, Ghana, where 80,000 decisions were registered and 240,000 attended. Thereafter, additional campaigns followed across Africa. In 1988, 750,000 registered decisions were recorded through CfaN. Seven campaigns were held in Africa and one in Manila, with total attendance of 3,935,000.
Increasing Impact Across Nations
Subsequently, in 1989, 770,000 decisions were registered. By 1990, twelve African campaigns and a Euro-Fire Conference in Portugal brought attendance to 5,395,000, with nearly one million registered decisions. Later, in Jinja, Uganda, after religious freedom was declared under President Yoweri Museveni, meetings began with about a thousand accepting Christ and reports of healings. On the third night, however, military police entered and ordered the crowd to disperse despite valid permits. Reinhard refused to dismiss them, insisting they had the right to gather. When some hesitated, soldiers used force, beating people. As a result, Reinhard left Uganda, sensing the Holy Spirit warning him not to trust the permit paper.
A Historic Crusade in Kaduna, Nigeria
1,670,000 attend Reinhard Bonnke’s Crusade in Kaduna Nigeria
Soon afterward, in Kaduna, Nigeria, Reinhard faced 500,000 people, many of them Muslims. Ministers wept that Muslims had gathered openly to hear the gospel. He preached with fervor, and when the altar call was given, a vast sea of hands was raised. Ultimately, the meetings concluded with total attendance of 1,670,000-more than the entire year of 1987 just three years earlier. To Be Continued…
