Are You Ready for Me?
In October 1972, Benson Idahosa hosted missionary friends from England. With no air conditioners, the windows were left open at night. At around 3 a.m., seven armed robbers entered, seeing the missionaries asleep. Awakened at gunpoint, the visitors explained they were not the owners and went to wake Margaret, who then woke Benson.
They all began to pray in tongues, but the thieves shouted, “Shut up!” Benson rose, Bible in hand, and confronted them. “Who are you?” he demanded. “We are men of the night,” they answered. Benson replied, “I am a man of the day. Are you ready for me?” Terrified, the robbers fled into the darkness within seconds.
The Redemption Hour TV Program Starts
When God revealed television ministry to Idahosa, he sought airtime on Nigerian Television Authority. His secretary was initially ridiculed by the program manager, who claimed television was not meant for religion. Benson confronted her boldly: “If you do not allow the gospel on television, I will remove you from your position.”
Three days later, government auditors uncovered N391,000 missing, and the manager was dismissed. Soon after, a trustworthy Christian young man was appointed. Benson instructed him, “I placed you here by God’s authority. Do not stand in the way of the gospel.”
When asked for pre-recorded tapes, Benson had none. Instead, he and the church choir spent three hours producing a Christian television special, The Redemption Hour, marking the start of his groundbreaking TV ministry.
Benson and Margaret Idahosa – Facing Legal Challenges
A bold newspaper headline declared, “Archbishop to spend Christmas in prison.” Senior members of the Church of God Mission had sued Benson and Margaret, accusing him of taking over the very church he had founded.
The case attracted national attention, with reporters crowding the courtroom daily. Cult groups opposing the gospel celebrated the accusations. Yet Benson dismissed these reports as lies of the devil, teaching his followers to trust that such attacks would pass like the wind.
