The Devil Attacks Dolly’s Instability

In the fall of 1794, Dolly and Carey were both stricken with dysentery. Carey’s fever was so high that he almost died. As he slowly recovered, dysentery overcame their five-year-old son, Peter.

His small body couldn’t handle the fever and constant diarrhea, and within a few hours, the lively young boy had died. Once again, William and Dolly experienced the anguish of losing a child.

Dolly’s Struggle with Mental Health

For Dolly, the loss was worse than in the past. She slipped into a depression that William could not reach. He prayed for her recovery, which came briefly. But by March 1795, Dolly began experiencing the first of many delusions concerning her husband and their marriage.

Carey recorded in his diary:
“I have had very sore trials in my own family, from a quarter which I forbear to mention. Have greater need for faith and patience than ever I had, and I bless God that I have not been altogether without supplies of these graces.”

Some Christian historians note that Dolly Carey was prone to depression, went to India under duress, and lost three precious children to disease.

Carey’s Love for His Family

A letter from Carey to Dolly before leaving for India shows his devotion:
“Tell my dear children I love them dearly, and pray for them constantly. Felix sends his love. Trust in God. Love to Kitty, brothers and sisters. Be assured I love you most affectionately. I am, forever, your faithful and affectionate husband, William.”

A Brief Recovery and New Life

For a short time in 1795, Dolly seemed to recover from her mental illness. Shortly after, she became pregnant with their seventh and final child. In early 1796, a healthy boy was born, named Jonathan.

Almost immediately, however, Dolly’s mental health deteriorated again, leading to a complete break from reality.

Delusions and Danger

Dolly experienced frequent delusions, hysterically accusing William of affairs with many women, including Mrs. Thomas and the mission’s servants.

Dr. Thomas wrote to the Baptist Missionary Society in London on Carey’s behalf:
“Mrs. Carey has uttered the most blasphemous and bitter imprecations against him, when Mrs. Thomas and myself were present.”

He described times when she threatened Carey’s life and explained why she had to be confined to her bedroom.

To be continued…
