The Experience of Bullying

As a young boy in secondary school, I was bullied by a certain classmate of mine in the boarding house. He grabbed me by the head, squeezed it, and threw my pencil out the window into very high grass. I don’t think I ever found it. He would do and say things like “Hey, why are you here when we are talking? Who told you to be around us?” He was just a bully – he bullied me in other ways that I can’t even remember. I just knew he made my life a bit miserable.

The Day of Deliverance

One day, I believe God was determined to set me free from him. We were in the field for games in the evening; I was throwing a small Frisbee, and I decided not to play again. Being the bully that he was, he said to me, “Come on, bring that thing here!” He moved towards me to grab it, and I moved backward. And as in jest, because we were out in the field, he feinted as though he wanted to box me by the side of my head. I bent low and picked him up by the waist and dropped him, not hard. He expressed surprise and said, “Wow! You did this to me!” and came towards me again.

I feinted towards his face, he lifted both hands, and I grabbed him by them, lay on my back, and used my two feet to throw him over my head. He came towards me a third time. I can not remember what tactic I used this time, but I had him on the ground again, and I was sitting on top of him, feigning a beating. It happened so quickly, I didn’t have time to think about it. That way, I bought freedom from his bullying till I left secondary school. I did not convert it into a fight because I was a born-again child.

The Lesson in Spiritual Warfare

In spiritual warfare, it is not by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit of God (Zec 4:6). Wisdom is better than strength. It is profitable to direct. Most Christians lose many battles because they fight with literal strength. They think that only praying loudly, shouting and straining, and just acting in ways that result in human sweat is what will bring them victory in the spirit. But we see the Lord Jesus at war with the prince of darkness (Satan), and He says, “It is written”. He fought with Scripture.

Wisdom and Strategy in Battle

A wise man is strong; a man of knowledge increases strength. For by wise counsel you will wage your own war and in a multitude of counselors there is safety – Pro 11:14.

The scriptures provide wise counsel. This wise counsel is the battle strategy – this is how a war is won; this is how an enemy is taken down. The strategy may be a slingshot and stones (David), march around and give a shout of praise (The Israelites), fight with 300 brave men (Gideon), or even die on a cross (Jesus). Yes! Jesus’ death on the cross won the battle against sin and death

Victory Through the Word

The primary way to win battles is through “the Word”. The word of God is the sword of the Spirit with which we fight (Eph 6). To know what God says, you must sit at His feet and hear from Him. You learn through Bible reading and studies, sermons, prophetic words, etc. Remember, God doesn’t have only one method of winning battles, so whenever you face a challenge, go to the Word to obtain your battle strategy.
