Word Information
Word: Moichalis
English: adulteress
μοιχαλίς – moichalis (moy-khal-is’) – adulteress
Source: Strong’s Concordance
Author: James Strong
Strong’s Definition:
(a) an adulteress (that is, a married woman who commits adultery)
(b) Hebraistically: extended to those who worship any other than the true God.
Most translations of James 4:4 read ‘Adulterers and adulteresses…’, but the original text contains only the feminine term adulteresses. This is because just as the intimate alliance of God with His people was likened to a marriage, those who relapse into idolatry are said to ‘commit adultery’ or ‘play the harlot’ (see Ezekiel 16:15, Ezekiel 23).
Colossians 3:5
Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
Covetousness (greed) and loving the world is idolatry – it is incompatible with love for God.
1 John 2:15-17
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
