Word Information
Word: Diatheke (Gk)
English: covenant
Source: Thayer’s Greek Lexicon of the New Testament
Author: Joseph H. Thayer
Thayer’s Definition
-a disposition, arrangement, or agreement entered into by two or more parties.
-a testamentary will
-a formal, solemn, and binding covenant or testament between God and His people.
While the Greek term “diathēkē” literally meant “will“, it was often translated as the equivalent of the Hebrew word “berith” (covenant) in the Septuagint. In biblical usage, a covenant is a sacred agreement that establishes a relationship or a set of obligations between God and His people.
Exodus 24:7-8
“Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, ‘We will do everything the Lord has said; we will obey.’ Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, ‘This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.’”
Luke 22:20
“In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.'”
Through covenants, the Lord creates relationships with His people and consecrates them to Himself.
Psalms 50:5
“Gather to me this consecrated people, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”
From the covenant with Noah (Genesis 9:16) to the new covenant in Jesus’ blood (Luke 22:20), we see that the sacrifice of obedience is the all-encompassing condition to keep God’s covenants.
