A Father Transformed
“I am sorry,” he stated.
“Papa?”
“I am not worthy to be your father.” Samrita swallowed hard, then asked, “What has happened to you?”
“I am not the man you knew years ago,” he said. “I am a changed man.”
Her idealism encouraged her to believe him; her memory encouraged her to doubt. “And how do I know this?” He held out a small box. “For you.” She opened it. Inside was a necklace with a small wooden cross.
“Samrita,” he said. “I have left my anger, my ego, and my stupidity at the foot of the cross. I am now a Christian.”
Discovering Peace in Christ
She did not know exactly what this meant. But every month whenever she visited her family after that time, she discovered he had indeed changed. He told all of his children about what Christ had done in his life and begged their forgiveness. Although her father’s words intrigued Samrita, his actions convinced her that whoever this Christ was, he had power. Formerly a bully, her father was now gentle. Once belligerent, he was now kind. At one time selfish, he was now selfless.
She began asking about this Jesus, and at a Christian seminar in 2008, she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior. She did not tell Uda, however. She had found the peace she had longed for and didn’t want to spoil it.
Facing Opposition
When Uda found her Bible one day, he lashed out. He cursed her and kicked her out of the house. Samrita grabbed their two children, ten-year-old Lili and five-year-old Faiz, and took them with her. Uda decided to divorce Samrita, and he also reported her to the Shariah police in charge of administering Islamic law. They ordered her to appear in court before the religious authorities.
