MARRIAGE AND A VISION
Coe heard Juanita Scott was traveling with a singing group. They had exchanged letters for years. After a new pastor arrived, Coe planned to start a church and invited the Southern Carolers, but army restrictions stopped the meetings.
He found other revival work for the group and met them after services. Coe and Juanita grew close and married. In government housing, they slept on a concrete floor with blankets and fasted three days. Soon they had furniture, a car, and savings.
Seeking to understand divine healing, Coe read P. C. Nelson and dreamed his sister was dying. A bright light filled her room, and she cried, “I’m healed!” The next day he learned she had double pneumonia, had been given up to die, and the hospital confirmed his dream. God healed and saved her.
READY TO DIE
In 1944, while Juanita was expecting, Coe fell ill with tropical malaria. His weight dropped from 230 to 135 pounds, his fever reached 106 for fifty-four hours, and his spleen and liver swelled. He was sent home.
He prayed, “Now, God, what shall I do?” The Lord answered, “I’ve called you to preach the gospel. Go out and preach it!” Attacks returned—strong chills and high fever—yet he still obeyed and preached whenever he could.
After repenting, he said, “All right, Lord, I’m ready to go now.” A voice replied, “You’re ready to go, but you don’t have to.” He felt as if covered with warm oil: “You are healed now.” He woke Juanita and cried, “I’m healed!” The next night he preached; three people were saved. Later that year he was ordained and never had another attack.
OH NO! A BLIND PERSON?
In 1945 at Longview, Texas, Coe studied and prayed on divine healing and announced, “God’s going to open the eyes of the blind.” A blind woman came; afraid, he sent her to the back. The Lord rebuked him, “Whatever made you think that you could open the eyes of the blind?”
He repented, anointed her, and prayed twice. She cried, “I can see!” News spread, and an Oklahoma pastor invited him; after the first night, they rented the high school gymnasium. Deaf ears and blind eyes were opened, and people rose from stretchers.
Coe tried to pray for everyone, often until five in the morning. People woke him for prayer; with little sleep, his body began to break down. God told him to use wisdom and rest. He obeyed and was revitalized to pursue a stronger ministry to the sick.
