Later in the spring of 1927, Jeffreys’ campaign moved on to Southampton. At first, the meetings were small, but they soon grew in size and recorded numbers of salvations. Miss Florence Munday experienced an outstanding miracle at the Southampton meetings. She was raised from her wheelchair at a service in Wesleyan Central Hall in May 1927. Her stirring testimony increased the faith of many.
Fourteen Years of Affliction
Fourteen years earlier, Florence had fallen and hurt her knee. Tuberculosis had settled into the injury, and she had been unable to stand or walk since that time. In addition, since early childhood, she had suffered from a skin disease that required her to cover her arms completely with bandages to protect the broken, bleeding skin. Doctors had designed a number of different casts for her knee, but to no avail; each one still left her writing in pain. They had finally decided that the only answer was to amputate her leg, and so completely that an artificial limb would be out of the question.
The Turning Point
It was at this point that the Lord intervened. Florence’s sisters attended a Jeffreys revival meeting and saw a woman receive healing and stand up from her wheelchair. Soon after this, Florence’s sister Ivy urged her to attend a Jeffreys meeting. Florence was nervous, yet she agreed to go. On May 4, 1927, her mother and sister wheeled her to a meeting in her “invalid carriage.” Jeffreys preached on Christian disappointments, a subject that touched Florence’s aching heart. During the hymn “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name,” Florence felt the power of God begin to fall on her.
The Miracle
Before long, an intense Jeffreys approached Florence in her wheelchair. “How long have you been lying in this old carriage?” he asked her. Florence told him, “Fourteen years. I have not walked for fourteen years. The trouble is my knee. It is a wasting disease.” “Do you believe the Lord can heal you?” he asked. “Yes,” Florence replied. Jeffreys then asked her to return the following afternoon for the healing meeting. “The next afternoon, Jeffreys prayed over her, ‘Oh, Lord, turn back the disease, and unlock these joints.’ As he prayed the power of God surged through her body, shaking the carriage and she felt the knee bend in the splints.”
Florence’s Testimony
Her testimony continued, “I was anointed with oil, and as he prayed, my whole body vibrated with life. I was under the power of God. My leg moved up and down three times in my splint, and soon I was able to sit up. All pain was gone. I was healed. I was on my feet for the first time after fourteen years! I walked around that big building three times….Jesus Thou art everything to me!”
