“I knew it had to be Jesus because I also knew the enemy would never tell me I could walk. So I locked the wheels on the wheelchair and stood up.”
Richard’s doctor had warned him not to try to stand up because his weight would push the leg through the hip and destroy the right ankle. He was not supposed to do anything even as simple as pushing against the foot of the bed to scoot himself up. If he wanted to move, someone else had to move him.
The Moment of Faith
So why did Richard stand up that day and risk losing everything that had been accomplished? Because he wanted to be out of that wheelchair. Richard explains what happened next.
As I stood up, I lost my balance and began to run. I ran through the living room trying to grab hold of something, anything, but there was nothing but open air. Finally, after running about thirty feet, I managed to stop myself by grabbing onto a door face. In amazement I said, “I just ran out of a wheelchair! Jesus, I will never doubt You again!” Then I looked around and realized I was about thirty feet from my wheelchair.
Needless to say, Richard’s doctors were amazed to see him walking again. They never expected it.
Medical Confirmation
A few weeks later I went back to the doctors. The orthopedic surgeon could not believe it when I walked into his office on my own two feet. At that time I was living with my aunt and uncle. They had rented me a walker because I still had trouble controlling my walking and they were tired of my weaving through the house, grabbing hold of them and nearly knocking them down. I used the walker for a week, then I began using a cane. It was with the help of that walking stick that I walked into the surgeon’s office that day.
Despite his amazement, he was concerned that I was going to break and destroy everything that had been accomplished. “You don’t understand,” I assured him, “this is Jesus. This is the power of God.”
Entertaining an Angel
A few days later I picked up an elderly man hitchhiking on the side of the road and took him the 90 miles to his destination. As he prepared to get out of the car with his suitcase he looked at me with a sad expression and said, “I wish I had a walking stick. I left mine on the side of the road where you picked me up.” Moved with compassion, I reached over and handed him mine and said, “I will get another one, so take mine.”
About halfway home, Hebrews 13:2 came to my mind. I grabbed my Bible and looked at the reference: “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.”
When I got home, I started chasing my aunt and uncle through the house to tell them about this man who could have been an angel. That is when I discovered that you can have a revelation from the Lord and nobody else gets excited about it.
All of a sudden my aunt said, “Where is your walking stick? Why are you not limping anymore?” I looked down and said, “I gave my limp away.” I never limped after that.

Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
