Almost everyone wonders about demons—if they are real, what they can do to people, and how they operate. Don Dickerman has become an expert on this topic. In the past 20 years, Don has ministered in more than 850 prisons and has helped free more than 25,000 men and women from demonic powers.
A Ministry Among Prisoners
Don came to his understanding of demons through his work with prisoners. In the early years of his ministry, Don preached the love of God in many prisons. He saw that the inmates often developed a genuine faith, but something drew them back to their old ways once they were out of prison.
While in prison, they would go to Bible studies, read their Bibles, and pray, but when they got out, it would only take five or six months before most of them fell back into their crime patterns and were returned to prison.
A Cry for Answers
After years of seeing so much recidivism, Don was losing heart. He said, “I prayed about it constantly, asking God what I was missing that so many just went back to their old ways.
“I was feeling particularly low when I was ministering in a Galveston, Texas, prison. I had come back to my motel, and I felt so frustrated that I lay on my bed and wept. I asked God, ‘Why can’t I get people out of bondage? What am I missing? I want to be a deliverer!’ I did not imagine what a profound change in my life was ahead of me after this prayer.”
A Vision and a Promise
“Not long after this prayer, I went to preach in a federal prison in Three Rivers, Texas, near San Antonio. A corrections officer was in the audience listening to my sermon. We left the service together and as we walked to our cars, he told me that he was studying for the ministry and wanted to be a counselor in the prison system.
“We both left the prison at the same time and were heading in the same direction, toward Corpus Christi. When I stopped at a gas station, he pulled in behind me and came over to my window, seeming excited about something.
“He told me about a vision that he had while I was preaching back at the prison. In the vision, I was standing in a pot of bubbling oil surrounded by sick people. The oil began to bubble up and run down my arms. As it touched the people, they were healed. Then he said, ‘Get ready, brother. God is fixin’ to pour it out on you.'”
The Beginning of a New Calling
Don knew this vision was from the Holy Spirit, but he did not know what to make of it.
He had come from a Baptist background where dreams and visions are not often mentioned. He certainly had never seen supernatural healing and deliverance, and was completely unprepared to see this in his own services.
