And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified with Him. Romans 8:17
Thayer’s Definition:
- one who receives by lot, an heir
- in Messianic usage, one who receives his allotted possession by right of sonship
Following justification, we are called to inherit according to the hope of eternal life:
Titus 3:7 …that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
We should note the distinction between the promise of an inheritance (and an assurance of hope), and the complete fulfillment of the promise in its entirety (where that which is hoped for is seen).
Believers are heirs by faith according to the promise of God (Romans 4:13-14, Galatians 3:29, Ephesians 3:5-6). However, in this age, we wait in hope (while sharing in His sufferings – Rom 8:17) for the full manifestation of these promises.
Romans 8:18-19
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.
Today, the heirs of the promise of glory are found amongst the lowly of this world – not necessarily in the thrones and palaces of men’s kingdoms. James 2:5 Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?
