Unbroken by Threats
Sajid shook his head. “Then you will be following Jesus on stumps!” the man replied. “When your feet crumble, we will ice down your nubs; and, when your nubs freeze, we will saw them off. Jesus will turn and look for you, but you will not be there because you will be a man with no legs! Ha! But if you follow Allah, you will not only walk but also run. Isn’t that the better option?” Again, Sajid shook his head. “Jesus,” he cried out, after hours of ice torture. “Help me. Help me, Jesus!”
A Vision of Strength
Sajid later recalled what happened next:
“Suddenly, I saw a vision of a radiant angel appearing in front of me – Jesus was with me, like the fourth man when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were in the fiery furnace.” His pain eased, he gained strength; and, to the surprise of his tormentors and the crowd mocking him, he began singing worship songs. Then, he blacked out. Sajid awoke in the middle of the night lying in a drainage ditch alongside a dirt road. His wallet and a Hebrew language book he had been carrying sat beside him. A passerby, a modern-day good Samaritan, checked him into a local hotel and paid for him to stay there for three days while he recovered. Afterward, Sajid’s brother took him for medical treatment, and then home to rest.
Walking with Jesus
Jesus never promised a life of ease on earth to those who serve Him; but, He did promise that He would not abandon us to labour and suffer alone. When He sent His disciples out into the world to spread the truth, as Sajid was doing, Jesus promised, “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) The very presence of Jesus with us in the midst of our suffering gives us courage to press on when our own strength fails us. Let’s join others – people like Sajid – in God’s global family to serve Jesus with our eyes set firmly on Him; let’s pray that we will not be deterred from courageous living for God; and, let’s encourage one another in single-mindedness to keep running after God despite the world’s attempts to knock our feet out from under us. Sajid’s tormentors stated that without feet Sajid would be unable to follow Jesus, yet today he is still walking – and still talking – about his beloved Saviour.
