An Unusual Invitation
In 1983, a group of Algerian locals watched tourists set up their tents in the Tizi Ouzou Province one evening. “It was a windy place, and they set up the tents the wrong way,” remembered Hassan, who was there with about a dozen friends. “The wind blew everything over-their tents and their belongings. We laughed at them and then went over to help.” One of the visitors expressed thanks for the help and then, in the spirit of friendship, extended an unusual invitation: “Would you do us the pleasure of engaging in a friendly soccer match tomorrow?”
Hassan huddled with his friends and replied, “We would love to, but our best player is sick in bed with a fever. Without him, we would probably not give you much of a game.” One of the visitors, his brow furrowed, asked, “This friend of yours- might we see him? We’d like to pray for his healing.” Now Hassan and his friends had furrowed brows. Prayer? Healing? God being interested in a single individual? These concepts seemed odd to the Algerians, yet they were intrigued by the offer. So that night, the tourists prayed over the young man.
A Healing That Sparked Questions
In the morning, he felt no sign of sickness and played in the game. Amazed, the Algerians began asking questions about this apparent healing. “Who is this ‘Father’ you prayed to who heals?” Hassan asked. The tourists weren’t missionaries. They were simply people who loved the Lord and were eager to share his glory. They explained the grace, salvation, and power offered through faith in Christ, then continued on with their journey. But in regard to Christianity, Algeria would not remain the same.
