ENCOUNTER WITH THE HOLY ROLLERS
About a year and a half after he was saved, Coe heard about a “holy roller” meeting. Out of curiosity, he and his sister went to check it out. He felt the meeting was a lot like his Nazarene church, except these people spoke in other tongues, and when people went to the altar, they fell under the power. At first, he thought they were fainting.
The preacher spotted Coe and asked, “Are you a Christian?” After Coe answered yes, the preacher asked, “Have you received the baptism in the Holy Ghost? Did you speak in tongues?” Coe replied, “No sir, I haven’t, and I don’t want to, either.”
The preacher challenged him: “Will you go home and read everything there is on the baptism of the Holy Ghost, then pray that if it’s for you, you’ll get it, if not, there’s nothing to it?” Coe agreed, thinking, “I know there is nothing in the Bible about tongues.” But everywhere he read in Acts, he found the term “other tongues.”
He asked his Nazarene pastor, who replied, “If God ever wants you to speak in tongues, He’ll let you do it after He calls you to be a missionary, so that natives can understand you.” As Coe left, the pastor warned, “Stay away from those holy rollers, or they’ll put a spell on you.”
THE DESPERATE CRY
That night, Coe told his sister the meetings were of the devil. She replied, “Then why do they quit their lying and stealing, and other wrong things?” Tossing in bed, Coe finally ran to the meeting. Again, the preacher invited him, and Coe said, “If God wants to fill you without speaking in tongues, it will be all right with us.” Coe came forward but ran out when the people prayed loudly, shouting, “Turn loose!” “Hold on!” “Empty him!” “Fill him!”
Outside, he thought, I sure proved there wasn’t anything to it. Then God spoke to his heart: “You want it so bad you don’t know what to do. You know it’s for you; you know it’s real.” Coe cried, “God…if I don’t get it, I’m going to die.”
THE BREAKTHROUGH EXPERIENCE
The next night, he ran to the altar. Suddenly, he saw a bright light, and Jesus took his hand. When Coe came to, he was lying in sawdust at 4:00 a.m., speaking in tongues. For three days, “all I could do was speak in tongues.”
