SONGS OF REMEMBRANCE AND MEMORISATION

Psalm 78:2-4: I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the beginning, that we have heard and known and our fathers have relayed to us. We will not hide them from their children, but will declare to the next generation the praises of the Lord and His might, and the wonders He has performed. [BSB]

Here, we see that music becomes a tool for remembering and teaching the works of God across generations.

“Remember Me” by Marty Nystrom

On the night You were betrayed/You took the bread

After giving thanks/You broke it and said

This is My body broken for you/And as you eat it remember Me

This is My body broken for you/And as you eat it remember Me

On the night You were betrayed/You held the cup

After giving thanks/You lifted it up

This is My blood poured out for you/And as you drink it remember Me

This is My blood poured out for you/And as you drink it remember Me

That’s not just a song. That’s a song that helps you remember. It shares the story of the Last Supper and reminds us of the Lord Jesus’ sacrifice, which is something He commanded us to always remember.

And when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. 1 Corinthians 11:24‭-‬26 BSB

One of Our Songs

At our church, we have been blessed with songs that remind us of where we’re coming from—God’s story, our story, and the many deliverances He has given us. These songs are a gift, and we’re grateful to share them with the Body of Christ.

One powerful example is the song “Lead Us Back to You.”

Since You drove mankind away/Then You drew him back again

You promised that/In every nation

In every generation,/Those who call on You, O Lord

You’d come to them/If they’d come with a single heart

You’d reveal Yourself with power,/And in this hour

For in Your presence, there’s fullness of joy,/Your right-hand, pleasures evermore

Lead us back to You

When we came back to You, Lord/You called on others too

Showed us Your ways/You held to our hands

And showed us the land/Fill us O Lord with the love You have for them

Turn them back from their evil ways/Love will turn them into our brothersAnd our sisters.

You can explore our music on God’s Lighthouse or Ita Udoh on platforms like Spotify, YouTube, Audiomack, Apple Music, Boomplay and YouTube Music. Examples of our songs of remembrance are:

  • Lead Us Back to You
  • Hallelujah (He Saves)
  • He Knows Your Name
  • Thank You, Adonai

Music for Scriptural Memorization

In addition, music is a tool that God has given us for scripture memorization. In our church group, one of the ways we’ve been led to memorize large portions of scripture is by setting them to melody. Through this simple yet profound method, we’ve seen how easily people recall scriptures—often without even trying—just because they’ve been put to song.

This should not be surprising. Music has a unique ability to embed words deep within us. It’s the reason we can still remember nursery rhymes from childhood. Melodies make words stick, and when scripture is set to music, it becomes almost effortless to learn and retain.

Over the years, our church group has composed and sung many scripture-based songs—transforming multiple Bible passages into melodies. These songs have helped us hide God’s Word in our hearts (Psalm 119:11), equipping us with the truth we need in moments of temptation, difficulty, or decision. They rise up within us when we need them, giving life, direction, and strength (John 6:63, 2 Timothy 3:16-17).

You can listen to our Memory Verses and more on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Audiomack, Boomplay, etc. You can also get these melodic scriptures by visiting the playlists Symphony of Scriptures 1 and Song – Memory Verses 1 on Ita Udoh’s YouTube Channel.

Sing along and let these songs help you plant God’s Word deep into your heart. Music can do that. Music should do that.
