Word: Elehos (Gk)
English: Mercy
Source: Strong’s Concordance
Author: James Strong
"Go and learn what this means: 'I want mercy and not sacrifice,' because I did not come to call righteous people, but sinners." Matthew 9:13
Definition
The word ‘mercy‘ is derived from the Greek word, ‘Elehos‘ meaning an uncertain affinity; compassion (human or divine, especially active).
To exercise the virtue of mercy, one needs to act in love towards others and not out of selfishness. “For it is love that I seek, and not sacrifice; knowledge of God more than burnt offerings”. Hosea 6:6. We are meant to show kindness and good will towards people, especially the miserable and the afflicted, not delighting ourselves in the offerings and sacrifices we present to God.
