Let’s picture this: Your mother is driving home from work and there’s a traffic stop ahead. As she tries to pass the green light, through her rear mirror she sees a fuel tanker trying to accomplish the same purpose at top speed while overtaking cars.

Suddenly, the light turns red and the car in front of her brakes strongly and stops as does she. But it is obvious that the brakes of the tanker, which was about 30 feet behind her, are not working. Its driver is honking and flashing the headlights wildly, while swerving left and right, and headed straight (or crookedly) towards your mum’s car.

She cries out in a desperate prayer to God in the hope of deliverance from impending death in about 2-3 seconds – “Save me Jesus!”

From above she hears God say, “If you don’t cover your hair with a scarf first, I cannot hear your prayer.”

This is in line with the word of God which says in 1 Corinthians 11:5-6 And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonours her head – it is just as though her head were shaved. If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head.

Of course you know how the story ended: she didnt have time to pick her handbag at home and get the scarf and put on before praying so… She died.

Moral of the story? – ALWAYS WEAR A SCARF IF YOU ARE A FEMALE SINCE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU MIGHT HAVE NO TIME TO GET ONE FOR PRAYER.

Do you agree? YOU DON’T?! Why not, please?

What is Prayer?

Is it not from the scriptures? Remember, God does not change. So your opinion does not matter. Forever, His word is settled in heaven (Psalm 119:89).

Many years ago, I preached to sisters who would listen about the importance of always covering their hair with a scarf in church. I did not believe they had to outside. I also never thought of the terrible scenario painted above. As I grew in knowledge and understanding of the word of God and His love, I rethought many things, including this.

As women, why would God care so much about the state of your hair and its exposure? What has that to do with anything?

When you pray, what does God look at? Do your externals matter at all? Of what consequence are your externals? Can you wear a singlet to pray? Underwear?

What is prayer?

Mercy Lord! Help me Jesus! God deliver us from evil. Blessed be the name of the Lord!

Do these qualify?

When you are praying, should you use a respectful pose? You’re going to pray; you want to seek the Lord’s face but He is a Spirit. So should you act in a responsible way? The answer may be Yes. So what is the meaning of being responsible? Does that stop you from being in a car and while it’s moving, you are praying?

Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. 2 Peter 3:15-16

I’ll leave you with a thought till next week:

But I would have you know, that the head of every man is CHRIST; and the head of the woman is the MAN; and the head of Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonours his head. But every woman that prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonours her head: for that is one and the same as if she were shaven. 1 Cor 11:3_)-5

Hint: HEAD IS NOT HAIR
